For us, traveling to Africa is like going back to the origins of the earth. We feel connected with the people, the animals, the plants, the ground, the sky - the food! There is so much about Africa to enjoy and we can't help but immerse ourselves in a culture rich with love and hope.
Our love for Africa began in and with South Africa. Firstly for the obvious reason that Tex was born there, but secondly for the warmth of the nation and its limitless horizons. The people of South Africa have suffered great pain and been faced with hardship, but have emerged with a fierce determination to succeed. I think this is one of the traits that drew me to my husband in the first place!
Determination is part of the Mulu making.... together we were determined to bring our passion and our desire for a unique concept to the Coast. We want the locals to immerse themselves in something special without having to step foot in an airport!
"How nice would it be to have our customers leave wanting more of Africa.... wanting to book a holiday to Africa.... wanting to get to know a place in our hearts"
Painting the walls in colors to capture the Savannah plains, watching the springboks prance by in our dining room or smiling at the cheeky meer-cat that happily stands out in the crowd.... Designing Mulu Char was my favorite part! Whilst Tex was busy organising cutlery, kitchen equipment, tables and staffing I was in my element scouting for anything African. The more I looked, the more ideas I would have. It was such an enjoyable experience shopping for textiles, statues, ornaments, art, jewelery and so much more. I remember back to the time we traveled Johannesburg and the array of unique South African handcraft, beaded dolls, wooden carvings and collectibles. So I got busy and found a buyer in South Africa who could get his hands on the most beautiful of all fore mentioned items. The excitement when the crate arrived - well that's another story.
In the meantime, let your imagination roll when you visit Mulu Char. Take time to look at the decor through our eyes and be carried away with the spirit of the African music humming in the background......
